Born in Paris to an acrobat father and street singing mother, Edith spent her formative years struggling to make an impression as a singer herself, following her mother into street-singing and finally being spotted by an impresario.
By 1936 Edith had become one of Paris’ most popular entertainers and began her recording career. The outbreak of the Second World War saw her become as important to French soldiers as Vera Lynn was to British ones, and Edith performed a number of concerts for French prisoners held in Germany.
She further enhanced her career after the war, scoring hits in both Britain and America and successfully touring the latter (she never performed in the UK) in the late 1940s.
The three albums in this series are being released to coincide with the fortieth anniversary of the death of the woman the French affectionately called Little Sparrow.
